Joseph (Joe) Bell McBride was born on 25th October 1892 in "Glen Home", Charlton, Southland, New Zealand and died on 18 March 1970 in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand at age 77.

Joe had to put in a year teaching at a country school before they would accept him for Teachers College. "I think he was 17yrs, I’ve seen a photo of him with his class. I imagine
he would have started Varsity while at Teachers College." said his daughter Kathleen Verkerk.

Joe was a teacher and first taught at Christchurch Technical College. He had a job at ChCh Technical College where he became Deputy Head. He became the first principal of Papanui High from 1936 - 1952. After retirement, he taught at Southland Boys High School.

He served overseas in the 1st World War, in the Infantry Battalion as part of the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.  

Joseph (Joe) McBride, aged just 21, was one of four brothers in the family who signed up for active duty and served in the Auckland Infantry Battalion. His brother William (Billy) didn't serve at Gallipoli, but they met later in Egypt.

 Joe was given the  ANZAC Commemorative Medallion  in 1967. Contained within a plush purple velvet box. Along with it, there was a lapel badge sized version given to him which we was to be worn on ANZAC Day.

 The rear of the ANZAC medal is inscribed with "J B Mc Bride". This bronze medallion was instituted in 1967 for award to Australian and New Zealand personnel who participated in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

On his return to New Zealand at the end of the war, he enrolled at Otago University and gained a BSc degree. Joe was 31 years old when he married. He was made Principal of the new Papanui High 1936. 

His portrait hangs in the main block at Papanui High School and the framed photo (shown below) in the McBride wing (named after him).
